Enhancing coding skills with CloudStor SWAN

CloudStor SWAN (AARNet, 2022) is a research-focused web service for running analyses that available to staff and students at many research institutes Universities across Australia New Zealand. In 2021, we used as teaching tool in the master-level subject, Computational Genomics (COMP90016) The University of Melbourne. This subject aims teach how analyse large genomic datasets using best practices software tools, pipelines student-written, custom code. 
 Although was not conceived tool, worked with their technical tailor our use case. innovative existing infrastructure allowed us effectively transition remote learning. Students could log credentials, from anywhere world, without VPN. ability access platform browser consistent computing environment all regardless operating system, having worry about installations on local machines. presented significantly improved experience servers had been past.
 We weekly workshops during semester assessment form assignments an exam. It format material Jupyter notebooks where seamlessly integrate text, graphics Additionally, assessed code questions can incorporate automatic marking written submissions be checked plagiarism. also introduce UNIX command line, important skillset previously taught Melbourne Master Science (Bioinformatics) program.
